Naga people are lovers of art & craft and the traditional crafts of Nagaland are unique in design. The cane & bamboo works of Nagaland is of high quality and the intricate designs on them depicts the rich cultural tradition of the Nagas. Their handicraft products find ready market in the country as well as in abroad. Naga craftsmen convert traditional handloom fabric into modern garments with vibrant colors. The most important handicraft work of the Nagas are wood carving, bamboo work, pottery and blacksmithy.
Using simple tools Naga make great wood carving that can be seen on the village gate. Nagas are expert basket makers. The shape of baskets change according to the tribe. Apart from the baskets, Nagas also make mats and shields with bamboo. They make drinking cups. Necklaces, armlets and leggings are made of cane. Naga metal work is very popular. The smiths produce the normal requirements of villagers like Dao, axe, sickle, knives, spear points and butts etc. The Konyaks are the best blacksmiths. They make muzzle-loading guns as well. |
